Cyprus originally started reopening its borders in June 2020 for tourism but saw a shrinking list of permitted countries as the year went on. Now, the updated entry requirements as of March 1, 2021 includes visitors from more countries, bringing a positive change to Cyprus’ tourism industry.

The introduction of a new 4-tier color-coded entry system that started March 1st will now enable tourists from over 40+ countries to enter without a quarantine period, with different testing requirements based on risk level.

Countries will be categorized as: Green, Orange, Red, and Grey. Each category has different rules for entering, which we describe in detail below.

Travel Insurance Requirements for Cyprus

While not mandatory for entry, all travelers should have travel health insurance when visiting Cyprus.

The government of Cyprus states as an added benefit of visiting during the pandemic, they will take care of anyone who contracts the virus during their stay.

“The Cyprus government is committed to taking care of all travelers who test positive for coronavirus during their stay, as well as their close contacts. The government will transfer these persons to separate facilities, covering the cost of lodging, food, drink, and medication.”

However, even with this added perk, all travelers should still have their own travel health insurance coverage in case of other accidents, illnesses, etc that are not Covid related.

Vaccine Entry Requirements or Exceptions for Cyprus

Cyprus is not currently asking for proof of vaccination for entry, nor are they making any exceptions for vaccinated travelers.

In February 2021, Transport Minister Yiannis Karousos stated that as of March 1st, 2021 Cyprus is planning to reopen for vaccinated travelers without restrictions. “The amended action plan is expected to further boost the interest of airline companies to carry out additional flights to Cyprus, improve connectivity and increase passenger traffic,” the minister said according to the Cyprus Mail

However, during the March 2021 updates, no exemptions for vaccinations were included. The updated protocol document states:

“What procedures are in place for persons who have been vaccinated for COVID-19? Information on this will be provided at a later date, once official guidance is available from European and international organizations such as ECDC and WHO. Until then, the same travel procedures will apply as for non-vaccinated persons”
